Where unique Mexican names come from

The rarest names on this site fall into three groups. Regional indigenous names: Eréndira and Yunuen are Purépecha, from Michoacán; Donají and Zyanya are Zapotec, from Oaxaca; Nicté and Zazil are Maya, from Yucatán. Outside their home states they are unusual, which is exactly what many parents want. Old religious names: Casimiro, Anselmo, Eulalia, Herminia, Ludivina, and the heavier Marian titles are real, documented names that simply belong to an older generation. And word-names: Azucena (lily), Lucero (bright star), Perla, Alondra (lark), Marisol, Selva (jungle).

For the names at the other end of the scale, see popular names. For the full indigenous lists, see Aztec names and Mayan names.
