Why Mexico has so many unisex names

The Spanish custom of naming a child for the saint or feast of the day of birth produced names that ignore gender. A boy born on December 12 could be Guadalupe; a boy born on July 4, the feast of Our Lady of Refuge, could be Refugio; a boy born on the feast of the Rosary could be Rosario. The masculine nickname often differs by one vowel: Cuca and Cuco, Chayo for both, Lupe for both. Cruz (cross), Trinidad, Ángel, Reyes, and Santos work the same way.

Nahuatl has no grammatical gender, so its words became unisex names by default. Citlali (star), Yólotl (heart), Ollin (movement), Tonalli (day sign), Atl (water), and Ilhuicatl (sky) are registered for both sexes, and the honorific -tzin (Yolotzin, Citlaltzin, Xochitzin) can be added to any of them. The Maya Itzel has settled as feminine and Balam as masculine, but Kin (sun) and Nicté (flower) still go either way.

Mexican unisex names FAQ

Is Guadalupe a boy or girl name?

Both. Guadalupe is given to girls far more often, but José Guadalupe and plain Guadalupe are established men's names in Mexico; Lupe works for either. The same is true of Refugio (Cuca or Cuco), Rosario (Chayo), Socorro, Concepción, and Carmen (as in José Carmen), all titles of the Virgin Mary that were traditionally given to boys born on the feast day.

Are Nahuatl names unisex?

Many are. Nahuatl nouns have no grammatical gender, so Citlali (star), Yólotl (heart), Ollin (movement), Tonalli (day, fate), Atl (water), and Tlalli (earth) are registered for both boys and girls, though usage has settled toward one side for some (Xóchitl is almost always female, Cuauhtémoc male).

What are gender-neutral Mexican names that work in English?

Cruz, Ángel, Reyes, Guadalupe (Lupe), Noa, Ariel, Sol, Luz, Alex, Dani, Sam, and the Nahuatl Ollin and Citlali all read comfortably in both languages.
